After months of anticipation, Apple’s iOS 4.2 update for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch has arrived. Downloadable immediately, the update brings new functionality to all of the company’s iDevices, including media streaming via AirPlay, expanded device tracking with Find My iPhone, wireless printing via AirPrint, and more. While each device gains a number of improvements with iOS 4.2, the iPad benefits the most with some long awaited features.
With iOS 4.2, the iPad finally gains multitasking support, which allows users to run multiple apps at once, swapping between them seamlessly. Moreover, the iPad will now feature folder support, providing improved app organization and a cleaner, easier to navigate interface. Users will also be able to rent TV episodes directly from their iPad via iTunes, and now, for the first time, use Apple’s Xbox Live-like service Game Center on their iPad.

The device will also receive a unified inbox for emails that consolidates new emails from multiple accounts.
As for the more general features, AirPlay allows users to stream videos and music stored on their iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to their home stereo system via AirPort Express or the Apple TV. Similarly, AirPrint will allow iDevice owners to wirelessly access a nearby printer and print documents, emails, and more without the need for a computer.
