New cloud certification scheme to be launched next year

CompTIA plans to launch a new cloud certification for IT workers next summer.

The certification will be one of the IT skills association’s ‘plus-series’ of certifications. These include A+, Security+, Network+, Server+ and Linux+. It is also aimed at individuals who already possess A+, Security+ and Network+ certifications.

The certification covers virtualisation, cloud-based storage and security. As part of the training, individuals will learn how to set up cloud infrastructures for businesses, according to CompTIA’s CEO, Todd Thibodeaux.

“If you were working for a company that wants to set up a private cloud using its own infrastructure, this certification would help you transition the organisation into the cloud, choose the applications, define the security and manage the service offering,” he told Computing.

“Most IT professionals are specialists; some in security, others are network engineers or work in support. However, we’re seeing an increasing need for people who can integrate these specialisms and understand how they work together.

“We don’t have a core of technical people who are really good at integration, and the cloud calls for that,” said Thibodeaux.

The certification will be delivered through the channels that CompTIA uses for other courses, including universities, vocational schools and specialist training companies.

Thibodeaux expects the certification to be launched globally in mid-2011.
